Search Is a Clerk
The box in the corner is not a convenience. For a lot of people it is the only staff on the floor.
The box in the corner is not a convenience.
For a lot of people it is the only staff on the floor.
If it cannot hear a real sentence, the catalog you built is a room they never enter.
Some customers browse.
Some customers ask.
They type the thing they would have said to a person — a use, a size, a half-remembered name, a problem. The site that only understands exact SKUs has hired a clerk who only answers when you already know the stock number.
We already wrote about the empty result.
This is the job before zero: whether the clerk was even findable, and whether they speak the language of the question.
A merchandising grid is a window display.
Search is the person you stop in the aisle.
If that person shrugs, the window was theatre.
How badly the clerk is doing
Baymard's 2026 search benchmark is blunt.
56% of sites fail to adequately support users' search. 46% of desktop sites, 58% of mobile, and 64% of apps rate mediocre or worse. Testers said the quiet sentence: they don't seem to have it — while the product was on the shelf.
Baymard's homepage review (2025, 180 large US and European sites) found 22% do not even put search where a person can see it.
A clerk in the back room is not a clerk.

What a useful clerk hears
Not only titles.
Use: for oily skin, for a small hallway.
Size said the way a human says it.
A brand the customer almost remembers. A question that is not a product at all — do you ship to Italy — answered, not with zero results.
The search log is then a brief.
The queries you fail are the next merchandising meeting, not a report you archive.
If the top failed query is a product you stock under another name, that is not a search bug.
It is a naming lie.
Fix the synonym before you buy another hero video.

How we think about it at BuonaLabs
We treat search as staff.
It has to be on the first screen.
It has to survive a typo and a use-case.
It has to fail with a next step, not a shrug.
If a client has a beautiful grid and a hidden box, they have a showroom with no one at the desk.
Search is a clerk.
Hire one that listens.
